Nightlight and wildlife

Light contamination is one kind of contamination that most normal people who aren't engaged with this territory of study, and they don't pay attention to along these lines. There are even individuals who don't have any acquaintance with it exists in any case and, animals are the most part influenced by this contamination.

The animals which live with us in the city like cats, coyotes, possums, raccoons, rats, and skunks, come out at the sunset to do various activities like mating, hunting, or just roam the city, are affected by the night lights which are disturbing for them. The study, led by researchers from Northeastern Illinois University, showed that the city’s nocturnal animals roamed less and were less active as nighttime light levels increased.

Since the COVID-19 broke out in the nations and became a pandemic, targeting everyone without exceptions. Governments have obliged self-quarantine for the populations. Curfews were set in order to limit roaming the cities and risking the lives of those who are ignorant. Consequently, the daily activities were limited, and with more people staying at home street lights decreased.

Going on the EOSDIS Worldview by NASA, we came to notice the difference of the light contrast on the planet from the date of 1st January 2020 until recent the recent day of 10th May 2020. We saw a huge difference especially in the area of North America, as shown in fig1, the contrast between the photos is clear.

In the World Economic Forum website, in the article titled ‘5 Ways the coronavirus is affecting animals around the world’, we can see that as a result of the quarantine, wild animals are now free to roam around and do their activates with freedom. And we believe that a part of the reason why is because of the limiting street lights.

We made an observation in our own country’s streets, and the results showed how much the streets were dimmer, as we have seen the stars clearer. Not mention that with quarantine going on, consequently fewer cars, meaning, fewer car lights which form a huge amount of light at night.
